What driving charges do you have to pay to drive in London?

Millions are ferried around the region every day on its Underground, buses, Trams, Overground, boats and even Cabel Cars. 

Whilst many prefer to stick to public transport, others would rather drive around the capital in their own private bliss. 

However, driving in London does come with its downsides, aside from avoiding traffic, cyclists and eager tourists, you also face charges. 

Throughout the years Transport for London (TfL) has begun different charges that cover a range of aspects in the region.

Whether you are a regular driver in London or are new to the roads, these are all the driving charges in the region that you may need to pay. 

What are the driving charges in London?

Congestion Charge

The Congestion Charge costs drivers £15 a day and runs from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 12pm to 6pm on Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays. 

The charge covers eight miles in the centre of London, from Euston Road and Marylebone to Tower Bridge Road and Commercial Street.

Drivers must pay in advance or by midnight the day after entering the zone for £15 or £17.50 on the third night. 

If you do not pay the congestion charge, you face a £160 fine of £80 if paid in 14 days. 

There are a number of vehicles exempt from the charge, including blue badge holders, roadside recovery, breakdown vehicles and vehicles with nine or more seats.

Low Emission Zone (LEZ)

The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) was put in place to help encourage polluting heavy diesel vehicles in London to become cleaner. 

It covers most of Greater London and operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year. 

Drivers affected by the LEZ have up to three previous days, the day of, or any day up to 90 days in the future to pay the charge. 

The costs start at £100 for vans and HGS but can rise to £300 for those that do not meet Euro IV PM.

Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is separate from the LEZ and instead affects all vehicles that do not meet emission standards. 

The ULEZ affects all Greater London regions and sees those affected pay a daily charge of £12.50. 

It was originally more central to the region before being expanded by London Mayor Sadiq Khan. 

The zone operates for every day of the year for 24 hours apart from Christmas Day.
