West Ham United have confirmed the sale of striker Gianluca Scamacca to Atalanta.

The 24-year-old joins the Serie A club on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee – reported to be in the region of £27million – after a solitary, injury-hit season at London Stadium.

The Italian international was signed by the Hammers for a reported £30million from Sassuolo last summer, signing a five-year deal with the option for a further year.

He made his Premier League debut as a replacement for Michail Antonio in their opening home defeat against Manchester City and netted his first goal in the UEFA Europa Conference League play-off win against Viborg less than two weeks later.

His first Premier League goal came against Wolves in early October but his season was blighted by a knee injury which required surgery.

He finished with eight goals in 27 appearances for the Hammers, five of them coming during their run to the unforgettable UEFA Europa Conference League final triumph over Fiorentina in Prague.

But he did not feature from March onwards and a brief statement on the club website said: “West Ham United would like to thank Gianluca for his efforts and wish him well for his future career.”
