The Good Front Room: Five Star Kitchen winner opens at The Langham

The chef’s flair for creating dishes that incorporate his Caribbean heritage and south London upbringing won over judges Michel Roux Jr, Culinary Director of The Langham, pastry chef Ravneet Gill and restaurateur Mike Reid at the series final on Friday, July 14.

As the winner, Taylor’s launches a six-month pop-up restaurant in the hotel in which the competition was filmed in, opening Saturday, July 15.

Born in Huddersfield to a Jamaican mother and a Saint-Lucian Father, Taylor was raised in south London surrounded by the ‘joyous’ cooking of the women in his family, and the restaurant’s dishes will be the chef’s recreations of childhood meals.

Called The Good Front Room, named in tribute to his Great Aunt Myrtle who kept one room in her trinket-filled home reserved for receiving guests, Taylor will also draw on his love of travel and classical training to modernise, recreate and play with Caribbean flavours and dishes.

Starters includes Ackee and saltfish cakes, confit garlic and scotch bonnet aioli; and pineapple and heirloom tomato chow and escallion oil.

For mains, the likes of goat curry with fried breadfruit and roti; banana leaf baked sea bream with lemongrass, pimento and ginger; or dark-rum-glazed pork belly, pickled raisins and cho cho are on the menu.

Taylor puts a riff on the traditional Jamaican bun and cheese for dessert with a toasted spiced bun, sweet blue cheese, sour cherries and spiced plantain chutney, or there’s a Coconut soft serve with pineapple compote as well.

The Good Front Room will be open for six months from Saturday 15 July 2023, Wednesday to Saturday, 6.30pm – 10pm, in The Langham’s Palm Court.
