Around 40 stations will benefit from 4G and 5G mobile coverage by Spring 2024, Transport for London (TfL) has said.
Rail customers travelling on the Elizabeth line and sections of the Northern line will soon find it easier to use the internet underground.
High-speed mobile coverage will be available at the Elizabeth line’s stations at Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon and Liverpool Street by the end of the year.
All stations and tunnelled sections of the line will have 4G coverage by the end of Spring next year.
This includes stations at Whitechapel, Stratford, Canary Wharf, Custom House and Woolwich.
The Northern line between Mornington Crescent and Archway already benefits from high-speed mobile coverage.
The new rollout, which affects customers from all four mobile network operators – Three UK, EE, Vodafone, and Virgin Media O2 – will see sections of the line between Tottenham Court Road/Euston and Camden Town with coverage.
The Edgware branch between Camden and Golders Green, and the High Barnet branch from Archway to East Finchley are also earmarked for improved connectivity.
The programme of works is being delivered for TfL by communications company Boldyn Networks and will add 5G coverage to sections of the Tube network with existing 4G connection, such as the Jubilee Line.
Sections of the Victoria line, Central line, DLR and London Overground are also set to benefit from 5G soon.
Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner said: “We are committed to delivering this programme which will allow customers to be more connected underground and get the latest travel information and news, as well as stay in contact with work, friends and families while travelling on our network.
“More stations, including the first Elizabeth line stations, will be connected in the coming months and we remain committed to having a significant proportion of the entire Tube network connected by the end of 2024.”
TfL has said it expects around 80% of stations on the Tube network to have mobile coverage by the end of 2024.
On Friday (September 8), it extended high-speed mobile coverage to the Central line between Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road.
