TfL to change speed limit to 20mph across London roads

It comes as Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that a number of regions across the capital would face speed limit changes to 20mph. 

The change is in part due to London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s Vision Zero policy which aims to see no one killed or seriously injured on the capital’s roads by 2041. 

Recent data shared by TfL showed that 48% of road deaths in London in 2020 were caused by speed.

TfL also shared that the lowering of the speed limit “because if you hit someone at 30mph they’re five times more likely to die than if you hit them at 20mph.”

We’re launching 65km of new 20 mph speed limits across the capital.

The new limits will be introduced on sections of roads in the following boroughs in 2023.

They added that safer and slower speeds would make a larger region of London safer to walk, encouraging fewer people to use their cars.

The boroughs in London that would see 20mph speed limits are:

• Royal Borough of Greenwich  
• Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
• Lewisham
• Southwark
• Wandsworth
• Merton
• Bromley
• Lambeth

Back in March 2020, TfL set 20mph speed limits on central London roads but are now dropping them to 10mph by May 2024. 

TfL is opening up the discussion to Londoners before the changes are in place and after the speed limit is in place. 

The speed limits by TfL will be enforced by the Metropolitan Police who will also work to increase their enforcement against drivers that speed and cause dangerous driving.
