A woman has said she is “sick” of contacting Royal Mail about a postbox  she often finds unlocked in Romford.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Recorder that the first time she saw the postbox open was in July last year.

She dialled the number on it to inform Royal Mail, she said, as the contents inside were at the risk of being stolen.

She assumed it would be a one-off instance but said she continued to see the postbox open another six or seven times in the coming months.

She contacted the customer service team to sort out the issue, she claimed.

Email responses from Royal Mail, seen by the Recorder, assured her that an investigation was being carried out.

The latest correspondence from Royal Mail, dated June 29, sent to her said: “The customer operations manager has been made aware of the dates when the box was not locked.

“He has confirmed that the members of staff that are responsible for leaving the box open have been interviewed regarding this matter and the appropriate action has been taken to ensure this problem does not occur in future.”

However, the woman found the postbox open again on July 8 when she said she pushed it shut and left a note.

She also emailed Royal Mail again and said: “Royal Mail has had plenty of chances to resolve this matter and I am heartily sick of hanging on the phone waiting to report it once again.”

She told the Recorder that the postbox has become like an “obsession of sorts” for her and added: “I wouldn’t want anyone’s post stolen; these letters can have private information of people. It’s just not nice.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said that the security of people’s mail was “one of their top priorities”.

They said that the lock on the pillar box has now been replaced and added: “We expect it to be secure going forward. We encourage anyone with concerns regarding our post boxes to always get in touch.”
