Romford boss looks to enjoy FA Vase tie at new base

Boro had a long run in the competition last season, earning a trip to the Channel Islands before bowing out to Jersey Bulls.

And they got off to a winning start at their new East Thurrock home last weekend, beating Ilford in the Essex Senior League.

A crowd of 232 looked on as Charlie Morris and Junior Luke netted in each half to seal the 2-1 victory, ahead of a midweek meeting with Woodford Town.

And Spinks said: “It was an excellent day, I really enjoyed it. We were really pleased. It was nice to come out to a decent crowd, with a few new faces from the local area.

“The boys were really pleased and the result topped it all off.

“It was a tough game, the pitch was the best it could be, we did well to get it on.

“I felt we dominated and deserved the three points. On another day we might’ve got a couple more.

“It was a bit new to us. Away games have been on turf but when it’s your home, you learn a few things.”

Morris took a pass from Daniel Nabikov-Getmansky and beat defender David Ejakita before firing a low shot past Kasey Clark for the first goal on 34 minutes.

And he earned praise from Spinks, who added: “It was a cracking goal from Charlie.

“He had a tough start to the season, after an horrific tackle, but the last three games he has looked back to the Charlie from last season.

“He’s got his name back in lights again, with Hassan [Nalbant] having a slight knock.”

Oliseh Okuguni levelled just past the hour mark, but Luke struck a 72nd-minute winner, moments after having penalty claims turned down and receiving a yellow card for diving.

“I was screaming for a penalty but you can’t really tell from 50 yards away,” added Spinks.

“The fans behind the goal said it wasn’t a dive but Junior got up and scored and said ‘that’s what happens when you wind me up!'”

Woodford were the visitors on Wednesday, having been knocked off the top of the table by Tilbury 24 hours earlier.

“It’s not the be-all and end-all, it doesn’t decide the title,” said Spinks.

“There are no easy games this year. Everyone is dropping points, it’s a tough division, but one game won’t decide it.”

Focus turns to the Vase again, with Boro facing fellow step-five side Crawley Green.

“I’ve had a chat with some mates of mine in that league and had a few videos sent over, which we will have a look at,” said Spinks.

“I try to take the FA competitions as a bit of enjoyment.

“Every round we progress is a bonus. But the league is our priority.

“We will enjoy Saturday, hopefully get a result and a nice draw.

“I’d love to go to Jersey again but I won’t be getting beaten 6-0 this time!”
