Romford boss delighted by magnificent seven-goal return

Boro made the trip of the back of a chastening 5-1 home defeat against Athletic Newham in the Essex Senior Cup – their fourth successive defeat in all competitions, in which they had conceded 18 goals.

And Spinks got the answers he was looking for as his side raced into a 5-0 lead by the break.

“It was a case of do you want to be here or not?” said Spinks.

“We said ‘after today we will know’ and it was clear they are all with us.

“It was our best performance of the season, the sort I’ve been expecting but not got in the last few weeks.

“It all clicked, there was that buzz and belief and it was a much-needed result, 100 per cent.”

Boro had been on the receiving end of a first-half blitz against Newham, with Richard Kone helping himself to a hat-trick as his side built a 4-0 lead.

The visitors added a fifth, before Henry Hart teed up Bruno Gomes for a late consolation.

“I left a few out, but there’s no excuses,” added Spinks.

“There were a couple of errors in the first 15-20 minutes which left us with an uphill task.

“We never got going but they’re a good side when you let them play. They dominated us.

“Second half we held our own, we made some changes to shore it up a bit.

“I was slightly disappointed but it showed where we’re at in times of the squad being a couple light.”

Boro bounced back on Saturday, taking the lead on 13 minutes when Finley Dorrell latched onto Kris Newby’s pass to score with a low shot.

George Cox controlled a cross from Charlie Morris to double the lead with a shot on the turn.

Dorrell took another Newby pass to fire home the third on 37 minutes, then took Hart’s headed pass in his stride to complete his hat-trick two minutes later.

And he became the first Romford player to score four times since Des Gallen in 2007 when finding the net again on 43 minutes.

Morris made it 6-0 within a minute of the restart, before the hosts hit back.

And Boro went 7-1 up when Morris controlled Daniel Nakipov-Getmansky’s pass and fired across the keeper, but was denied a hat-trick of his own by the post late on.

“We felt under a bit of pressure, we’ve had some bad ones over the last two or three weeks,” said Spinks.

“I don’t want to keep screaming and shouting at them, so to go in five up, it was nice to relax at half-time. It was a case of ‘Thank God for that’.

“When he’s at it, fully fit, Finley will be a huge asset for us and I expect him to push Hassan [Nalbant] all the way.”
