A man has been arrested after allegedly threatening shop staff, spitting on a police officer and attempting to bite several others.

Police were called at 12.20pm yesterday (June 14) after a man reportedly threatened female staff members at a shop in South Street, Romford.

Officers attended the scene five minutes later and detained a man.

As he was being detained, he allegedly assaulted an officer by spitting on him and attempted to bite several others.

Police said he has been arrested on suspicion of public order offences relating to the alleged shop incident and in connection with the alleged assault on an emergency worker during the arrest.

Chris Nixon, Ch Insp for Havering MPS, added: “We are aware of footage of this incident circulating on social media without this context.

“The officers will all be required to account for their use of force in effecting this arrest and the incident is covered by the officer’s body worn video,” he said.
