London Youth Rowing (LYR) works with dozens of schools across the country, supporting thousands of young people who would otherwise not have had the opportunity to try rowing, or enjoy the subsequent mental health, physical wellbeing, and social benefits of the sport.

As well as its projects in London, LYR runs outreach programmes in towns and cities across the country and is successfully increasing the diversity within a sport which has traditionally been seen as out of reach for many young people in urban areas.

Next month it is holding its annual Oarsome Challenge – a fundraising event which will see teams row along The Thames, from the start line at Tower Bridge to Putney Bridge before following the same course as the iconic University Boat Race to Chiswick Bridge.

Teams can choose to row on either July 10 or 11 and the event is proving popular with businesses looking for a teambuilding day with a difference, and groups of friends or family members looking to try something new together.

Fancy dress is actively encouraged everyone taking part will be supported by an experienced cox to help guide them through the row.

Teams are also offered training sessions beforehand to teach crews the basics of the sport and the type of boat being used has been carefully selected to enable people of all abilities to take part – including complete novices who have never rowed before.

Matt Rostron, chief executive of LYR, said: “The Oarsome Challenge is designed to introduce new people to the sport of rowing, teach important team-building skills, and encourage people of all abilities to challenge themselves – all while raising vital money to support our work with young people and giving people the unforgettable experience of rowing through the heart of London.

“It is a great chance for people to try rowing for the first time alongside colleagues, friends, or family and everyone at LYR looks forward to the event each year. It is amazing to see the effort and drive teams put into the race and the bonding that comes with that.”
