O’s defender Omar Beckles – who is also chair of the PFA – has made the list alongside two players who have since moved on from Brisbane Road.

They are Northern Ireland midfielder Paul Smyth, who is now at QPR, and goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux, who signed for Premier League side Burnley in June.

Northampton attacking midfielder Sam Hoskins, whose goal against Tranmere on the final day of last season sealed the Cobblers’ promotion to League One, is also on the list along with Salford midfielder Elliot Watt and Bradford forward Andy Cook.

Individual player awards for the three EFL divisions have been introduced for the first time this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the PFA awards.

The winners in all categories will be announced at a ceremony in Salford on August 29.
