Ruel Sotiriou had the best chance for the visitors at the Pirelli Stadium, but was unable to break the deadlock.
And O’s also lost Jordan Graham to a serious-looking injury in the opening quarter of an hour as they ended the month of October unbeaten with nine points from a possible 15.
“We think he’s done his ACL. It’s the main disappointment, even more than not getting three points,” Wellens told the club website.
“We’re gutted, he’s a big player for us, and it had a knock-on effect for the next 10 minutes of the game. We had to shuffle a few things.
“We send him our best and hope it can be as quick as possible but obviously with an injury like that it could be a long one.
“It stunk of third game in a week, second away game in four days. We were really poor second half.
“At times in the first half we were good, we played through them, and the best chance of the game, Sully is through one on one and has to tidy his touch up.”
Burton captain Deji Oshilaja had the best chance of all but blazed over from 10 yards, before Sotiriou had another effort clawed away by Max Crocombe.
And Wellens revealed the mood in the O’s dressing room was low, highlighting their growing expectations.
“All in all, did we deserve to win? Probably not. They could’ve nicked it at the end,” added Wellens.
“But their goalkeeper has pulled off a great save in the last couple of minutes, probably a draw was about fair.
“We’re disappointed. Everyone is down, we feel like we’ve lost the game.
“These have won four on the bounce at home, it’s a difficult place to come.
“The majority of the first half we had it the way we wanted to play the game.
“And the second half, too many long throws, too many free-kicks given away.
“We have to grow up where opposition change – we just hook things on, stop messing about in silly areas, play around corners, play forward – and we’ve never done that.
“I’m a little bit tired, it’s been a long week, so you imagine how the players feel.
“Again, it’s that inexperience, we just need to keep working and getting better.”
