O’s claimed their third win in nine league outings last weekend, as Ruel Sotiriou struck in the first half to see off Shrewsbury Town at Brisbane Road.

Fleetwood, meanwhile, picked up only their second point in eight matches after a 1-1 draw at Burton Albion and sit above only bottom club Cheltenham in the current standings.

But Wellens told the club website: “They’ve got some threats, players in this league that have caused handfuls before, Jack Marriott and Jayden Stockley, Danny Mayor has been really successful at Plymouth in this league.

“A team that have not started off very well but a team I went to watch pre-season against Blackburn and I thought was good out of possession.

“We’re getting better at the basics, it’s not going to be as free-flowing as last year, we will get there in the end.

“I’m very conscious that when we play our brilliant football – Wycombe, first half an hour against Portsmouth – we’ve not been winning.

“I needed to change my mindset and let that spread to the players, that first and foremost, build your way into the game, make sure we win duels, we defend our box well, and I do believe we’re growing into that.”

Sotiriou netted after 20 minutes against the Shrews to claim his fourth goal of the campaign and Wellens also hailed the impact of substitutes Shaq Forde and Aaron Drinan.

And with more players becoming available to him now after injuries, Wellens admits his squad depth is causing him some headaches.

“We’ve got really good lads. It destroys me,” he added.

“I’ve got some really good footballers. Rob Hunt, terrific footballer, Jordan Brown, Driz is coming back from injury, Ed Turns and Sweens [Jayden Sweeney] are not even in the squad.

“We know how could they can be. We’ve had meetings about it and as soon as the players that have the shirt drop off it [changes will be made].

“We can make mistakes and not play well. I don’t think Iddy [Idris el Mizouni] was great today, but it was all decision-making.

“Iddy worked really hard and I thought second half he grew into the game.

“When you have bad games but still try your very best then I believe you deserve to stay in.

“It’s when that intensity and enthusiasm drops out of your game, then we’ll make changes.

“We’ve got five players coming on today that could easily start for us.”
