The expansion means that millions more will need to pay the daily charge of £12.50 for driving a non-compliant vehicle. 

Created, by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Transport for London (TfL), the ULEZ is expected to help improve the region’s air quality as Khan shared: “Five million more people will be able to breathe cleaner air and live healthier lives”.

Many disapproved of the expansion since it was first announced back in November 2022, with five boarding councils refusing ULEZ cameras and some ripping down the cameras. 

How many ULEZ cameras are there in London?

Across the ULEZ, there are set to be around 2,750 placed across London all tracking vehicles. 

As there are a number of driving charges in London, some cameras are multipurpose and also cover the LEZ, ULEZ and the Congestion Charge.

How do ULEZ cameras work?

The ULEZ cameras work by scanning your vehicle’s number plate and checking if it is compliant or not within the low emission zone. 

It will then see if you have prepaid the charge or not, if you haven’t or do not have autopay, you will receive a notification to pay the charge. 

You must pay the charge by midnight on the third day following the journey in the ULEZ.
