Foxhills Country Club and Resort is around an hour’s drive from London and has something for everyone – including for couples, families, or friends looking to relax.

Having recently been crowned a winner in the UK Best for Families category of the Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence 2023, Foxhills is described as Surrey’s pre-eminent resort hotel embraced by countryside as far as the eye can see.

The listing also describes Foxhills as a “luxury pleasure playground”, as a haven for Londoners needing fresh country air, a retreat for golfers, sanctuary for foodies, a party planner’s dream venue and a refuge for families.

To be honest, I couldn’t have put it better myself, and I was lucky enough to enjoy an October stay at the Foxhills resort when the weather was gorgeously sunny, but crisply cold as well.

Ilford Recorder:

I felt de-stressed, relaxed and like I was in a slice of heaven at the 400-acre resort, and it was obvious that others did as well in the form of hotel guests, or returning members to enjoy the fitness, spa, golf and tennis facilities.

I arrived at Foxhills early on a Saturday afternoon, and checked straight into what would be my room for the night.

Ilford Recorder:

The hotel rooms are all part of their own courtyard if you like, and mine felt like a little cottage with its own back garden.

The room was spacious with a huge bed, mirrors, dressing table, cabinet of drawers and sofa, plus a large bathroom with a shower and bath too.

There were French doors which led out onto the stunning grounds of the resort, onto the 11 tennis courts and just round the corner from the beautifully blue outdoor swimming pool.

I had booked afternoon tea in the Manor Lounge which offers a delicious and traditional tea, so we went straight there after exploring our room and the grounds.

Ilford Recorder:

Mango lemonade was the pairing beverage of the day to the tea, which I couldn’t help but order more of as I’m a big fan of both mango and lemonade – so this was just perfect.

The sandwiches were fresh, flavourful, and they came with a generous array of sweet treats which I devoured my way through happily. Each person’s tea offering also came with two scones – one with and without raisins, and I greatly appreciated the option of both.

The setting was just exquisite and I felt immediately relaxed and away from the hustle and bustle while there.

After tea my boyfriend and I decided to go to the spa – and while the huge and wide-ranging gym which looks over the indoor pool was tempting – it was probably not the time to go in there after indulging in afternoon tea.

Ilford Recorder:

Instead we enjoyed the facilities of the indoor and outdoor spa, including a sauna, steam rooms, and indoor and outdoor hot tubs. It was the epitome of relaxation, and while we did spend the whole afternoon in there, I could have stayed all evening.

We had dinner and breakfast in the Fox dining rooms, which offers a 2 AA Rosette-awarded cuisine in an elegant setting.

For dinner I had tempura cod cheeks and sea bream, with some potatoes and broccoli on the side.

The food was fresh, the flavours were clearly thought through and the portion sizes were generous.

Paired with a bottle of red wine, dinner at The Fox gave the ultimate up-market, cosy feel which is exactly what you want on a cold wintery evening.

Ilford Recorder:

My boyfriend also had the tempura cod cheeks, and then had lamb for main course which he thoroughly enjoyed.

For dessert he had an apple and pear crumble, while I had a strawberry meringue dish. Both were absolutely divine, suitably sweet and really, really tasty.

We went back to our room and watched TV while the heat from the radiator blared, before waking up to breakfast the next day which comes in the form of a buffet and menu to order.

Ilford Recorder:

There were loads of options, including toast, bakery goods, eggs, waffles, pancakes, cereal, yoghurts and more.

I had a Belgian waffle with fruit which set me up for the day perfectly – we walked around the grounds and then took a leisurely drive back home feeling refreshed and set up for the week ahead.
