A fire has destroyed acres of grassland in Rainham as London Fire Brigade urged caution during the summer months.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled a grass fire in South End Road on July 16 at 3.12pm.

Around four acres of grass and shrubland was destroyed by fire and there were no reports of any injuries.

An LFB spokesperson said: “This summer, we are asking Londoners to help us protect the city we all love by doing everything you can to prevent grass fires.

“Please don’t barbecue in open spaces or balconies, throw your rubbish away safely and put your cigarettes out properly.”

The fire was under control by 5.01pm.

Fire crews from Hornchurch, Wennington, Romford and Barking fire stations attended.

The brigade urged people to avoid dropping cigarettes or burning matter on dry ground and to avoid having barbecues in parks and public spaces.
