Hornchurch captain Billy Gordon says they now face three ‘massive’ games in the Hamro Foundation Essex League Premier Division, having moved 16 points clear at the top last weekend.

After a 113-run win at Chingford in the first of nine timed matches, they host Brentwood on Saturday, then visit Buckhurst Hill and entertain Colchester before the season’s midway point.

And Gordon wants his side to maintain their momentum, saying: “We’ve got a full side out for Brentwood and if we can keep our confidence and keep playing well we’ve got a good chance.

“We want to try and build as things can change quickly. We’ve got three massive games with Buckhurst Hill and Colchester too.”

Gordon won the toss at Chingford and chose to bat, but saw in-form Jalpesh Vijay fall early before Paul Murray (29) and Jamie Sorrell (23) followed to leave them 79-3.

The skipper shared 47 with George Hankins, who added 126 with Ronnie Saunders (51) and 67 with Adeel Malik (34 not out), before falling for 143 from 124 balls.

Gordon declared at 319-6, adding: “Muz and Sorrell got us off to a solid start after Jalpesh got out.

“The wicket was very flat and George was superb, carrying on his good form. It’s either a first-ball or he gets hundreds or double hundreds!

“He’s done really well and hopefully he can keep it going as it stands us in good stead, keeping wickets in hand so we can go big.

“It was nice to see Ronnie get some runs too.”

Gordon struck with the first ball of Chingford’s reply, with Gavin Griffiths having success at the other end moments later.

And after Malik ended a 79-run stand for the third wicket, Hornchurch continued to make inroads at regular intervals.

Malik took 6-56 during a 15-over spell, holding onto two return catches off his own bowling and seeing Murray complete two stumpings.

“We got one first ball and another one pretty quickly, but they had a few back and we had to be patient,” added Gordon.

“Gav bowled really well but was really unlucky. The wicket was so flat and they did try and go for their runs, scoring at a good pace on a small ground.

“But we kept plugging away and Adeel showed his class.”

Hornchurch visit Harold Wood for a Dukes Essex League Cup third-round tie on Sunday.
