Chelsea Pensioners visit Romford Bowls Club, Lodge Farm Park

The Chelsea Pensioners visited Romford Bowls Club on a “historic” day to play an eagerly anticipated game.

The Chelsea Pensioners, retired army veterans who live within the Royal Hospital in west London, visited Romford Bowls Club on Wednesday (July 13) to celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary with a game of bowls.

Starting from the park cark, lead by a piper, the Chelsea Pensioners marched to the bowls club for the match.

David Taylor, Conservative councillor for St Edwards, said: “Romford Bowls Club is a hidden gem in Romford, I’m proud to be a councillor for such a historic club.

“Having the Chelsea Pensioners come to Romford shows you how highly respected our local bowls club is.”

Cllr Taylor said it was a close game, but Romford edged out to a win.

Romford Bowls Club have been at Lodge Farm Park for 60 years after moving from Romford Market.

The sports club was founded in 1898 and is one of Havering’s oldest.

“I congratulate the club on their 125th anniversary and I wish them a happy further 125 [years],” Cllr Taylor added.
