Train operator c2c said that services across its entire network would be disrupted until at least 9am this morning (September 13).
It comes after a freight train broke down between Rainham and Purfleet, blocking the railway line.
Bus service 287 between Rainham and Barking via Upney and bus service EL2 between Dagenham Dock and Barking are carrying passengers until further notice.
This forced the entire c2c network to be blocked from around 6.30am until 1pm, causing chaos for commuters.
Speaking about yesterday’s disruption, Rob Mullen, c2c Managing Director, said: “We are really sorry to all of our customers who were caught up in today’s disruption on the c2c route.
“We know this will have caused extensive delays to your journeys especially as it happened at the worst possible time during the morning peak.
“We worked closely with our Network Rail colleagues to try and get our services up and running as quickly as possible but we know this will have impacted many of our customer’s journeys today.”
Those caught up in yesterday’s delays are eligible for compensation.
