The 58-year-old has presented the radio station’s daily weekday teatime show for nearly two decades.

He has hosted the slot since 2005 for five days a week but he will now be scaling back his broadcasting duties to just one weekday after taking a break in October.

It will see Steve start a new weekly show on 6 Music, titled Steve Lamacq’s Teatime Session, from Monday, January 8, 4pm-7pm.

When will BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Steve Lamacq host his final daily weekday show?

This means he will present his last daily weekday show on Friday, October 20 from 4pm-7pm.

Posting on X (formerly known as Twitter), BBC Radio 6 Music revealed: “From the 9th of January 2024, Huw Stephens will be joining us, Tuesday – Friday at 4pm-7pm.

“Huw’s show will see him share the music he loves, past and present. He will focus on new discoveries & current obsessions whilst celebrating the alternative music our listeners love.”

Speaking to his listeners on Friday (September 1), Steve explained: “It will be a wrench to leave this slot full time.

“But after 36 years in radio and journalism chasing around after new bands, I’m a bit knackered and the family at this point comes first because they’ve been there for me – and now I want to be there for them.”

Many have taken to social media to support the legendary radio DJ, with one person saying: “@steve_lamacq is a legend, even if 6 moved him to first thing in the morning I’m sure he would conquer a crowd of Listeners with his talents…all the best with the new slot.”

Another wrote: “Shock news to hear in the car on the way home from the park with the children an hour ago! I will miss having Steve on my radio every day but the change of reduced hours is definitely well deserved after so many years of broadcasting. So glad Steve will still be on on Mondays.”

Sam Ryder is said to have ‘amicably split from his record label’

“A fantastic run for Steve Lamacq and glad he remains on a weekly slot. Da iawn to Huw for getting the driver[t]ime gig, thoroughly deserved. He seems to have done every timeslot on 6Music already so knows the listeners and is a champion of new music & independents,” added this fan.

According to the BBC, Samantha Moy, head of 6 Music commented: “Committed, passionate, with a knack for finding the diamond in the rough, he is one of our finest.

“While we were tucked up in bed, he was at a gig, watching someone unheard or unsigned, that he’ll play on the radio, who might then become your new obsession.

“Over 30 years is a long time to be doing that every day of the week, 20 years of them at 6 Music.”

Huw will take to the airwaves with his shows broadcast broadcast from Cardiff as part of the BBC’s Across the UK plans.
