More new council flats for renting are being made ready as part of a £36million regeneration project in Barking’s Gascoigne neighbourhood.

Construction workers have carried out a “topping out” on the latest tower block of 102 new homes.

The Willmott Dixon workers were joined on the rooftop by Barking and Dagenham Council leader Darren Rodwell.

“This will provide much-needed rental accommodation,” he said. “The Gascoigne neighbourhood regeneration is part of our programme to build 50,000 new homes by 2037.”

The flats are a mix of one and two-bedrooms being added to the 1,000 homes already built in the regeneration neighbourhood off the A13.

The block is due to be completed early next year, adding to the 815 homes recently completed in the neighbourhood.

More than a thousand new homes have been built in the regeneration neighbourhood to date, which are more energy-efficient and have better ventilation to avoid the scourge of dampness.
