As Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated films go head-to-head at the Box Office, the internet has come together to celebrate with Barbenheimer memes.

Barbie and Oppenheimer finally arrive in UK cinemas on July 21 after a year of film fanatics comparing and contrasting every little teasing detail from both pictures.

While the two movies have star-studded casts and distinguished directors, they couldn’t have more different aesthetics.

Hollywood hasn’t seen a divide like Barbie vs Oppenheimer since July 2008 when The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia! went head-to-head at the Box Office.

That being said, ever since Warner Brothers announced that Barbie’s release date would conflict with Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer, the internet has not been able to get enough.

From that moment on Barbenheimer was born.

Twitter users quickly cottoned on to the two film’s themes and general vibes and immediately began curating a bank of memes to highlight the stark contrast.

And from it, we’ve had an endless stream of memes, unofficial movie trailers, t-shirts and other merchandise.

Here are just some of our favourite ones.

Best Barbenheimer memes and reactions to mark Barbie and Oppenheimer’s releases

All trends have to start somewhere and the Barbenheimer is largely linked with social media users debating which person ‘has more say’ in their couple.

The trend also prompted the internet to decide whether they were the Barbie boyfriend/ girlfriend ( bf/gf) or Oppenheimer bf/gfs in their relationships – before users turned their attention to their favourite celebrities and fictional characters.

Although no one would have predicted Barbie and Oppenheimer as a double feature – they are an unlikely pairing that just works.

The bizarre match made in heaven has inspired some jaw-dropping ( and some equally disturbing) creations.

Many social media users have taken it upon themselves to make entire parody posters, blending the best elements of the two films together.

Lead actors Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy have often taken centre stage in these poster mashups.

Most of the posters try to capture the playful pink spirit of Barbie or the dark tension of Oppenheimer, others let their imaginations run free.

One poster – inspired by Ken actor Ryan Gosling’s film La La Land – sees Barbie and Oppenheimer dancing together.

Another has Barbie, who is wearing top to toe in pink with her white cowboy hat, recreating the Beatle’s iconic Abbey Road album cover with Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer dressed in black.

For a hot minute, the virtual world went wild for the ‘This Barbie’ meme where people could use the official Barbie Selfie Generator to create the most hilarious posts.

But we must take a moment to celebrate the Ken-energy of Ryan Gosling – even if he’s ‘Just Ken’.

The Barbenheimer fever doesn’t end there though.

The internet has blessed us with an entire unofficial trailer for Barbienheimer ( a film we must now desperately see).

That’s before we even get to the joy of #Barbeheimerday itself and the hilarious debate over which film you should see first and the extensive itinerary that comes with it.

Everyone has their theory of which order it should be – personally, we’re in favour of Barbie – Brunch – Oppenheimer.

But some fans have gone as far as to create entire itineraries as they try and establish the ultimate viewing experience for both films.

Users have created timelines for the day – factoring time in for everything from meditation and brunch to costume changes and karaoke.

Barbie vs Oppenheimer: Which film should I see first?

Radio 1 DJ Greg James says the correct Barbenheimer viewing order is Bombs – Brunch – Barbie.

Meanwhile, BBC presenter Zoe Ball disagrees, having seen Barbie in the morning and Oppenheimer in the afternoon.

Speaking to Oppenheimer actors Emily Blunt and Matt Damon on BBC Radio 2, she revealed: “It was the right way to go”.

The broadcaster added: “I was worried that it was the wrong way to go and I thought that I would need to be alleviated, but it was the perfect way to go”.

Fans have been weighing in on the debate with many sharing their thoughts in the comments.

One person shared: “I’m doing Barbie, Oppenheimer, Barbie.”

A second user commented: “Oppenheimer is a masterpiece but can be a downer for sure, I’ll need some uplifting thoughts afterwards, so Barbie after.”

A third said: “Oppenheimer first then Barbie. I’ve made my bed and I hope I’m right.”

While a fourth person joked: “First Oppenheimer, then Oppenheimer again for some lightness.”

The truth is – there’s no right answer but we hope we’re right all the same.
