An area of plywood and building materials on the fifth floor, the roof and an air conditioning unit was damaged by the fire.

The fire was under control by 6.35pm and crews from Millwall, Poplar, Shadwell and Whitechapel fire stations attended the scene.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “The fire was caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking material.”

They issued advice to smokers, adding: “It’s safer to smoke outside, but make sure cigarettes are put right out and disposed of properly.”
