Work on a £50million scheme to connect Barking town centre to the riverfront has got the green light.

The new Town Quay Wharf project has been agreed with developers by Barking and Dagenham Council for 147 flats, with 62 put by for renting and shared ownership leaseholds.

“This is a chance to get on the housing ladder,” council leader Darren Rodwell promised. “This development connects Barking town centre with the Roding Riviera, a buzzing embankment.”

The scheme, by developers Weston Homes, includes commercial space around a public plaza overlooking the Mill Pond and River Roding.

The council-owned Be First regeneration company gets an 11 storey block out of the deal, with 62 flats including 29 that meet the London Affordable Rent standard and 33 for shared ownership.

The scheme replaces the former industrial landscape with three new buildings and pedestrian boulevards, opening onto the waterfront with shops, cafes, workshops and artist studios.
