This weekend will mark a historic occasion as the first-ever Trooping of the Colour takes place for King Charles III. 

The traditional event takes place to mark the official birthday of the monarch and dates back to the 1700s. 

It involves a parade of hundreds of soldiers and also members of the Royal Family on horseback or in carriages, the event attracts thousands. 

Ahead of the special occasion, there is some key information to note, from when is it, the flypast and the route. 

When is Trooping the Colour 2023? 

The annual event typically takes place on a Saturday in June with no fixed date, this year it will take place on Saturday, June 17 to work with the King’s new official birthday. 

Last year saw Trooping the Colour take place around the same time as Queen Elizabeth’s II Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

What time is the Trooping the Colour flypast?

The Royal Air Force will be undergoing a flypast to celebrate the historic occasion. 

At the time of writing, aircraft taking part in the flypast have not been announced however, the Red Arrows are expected to appear. 

The RAF flypast for Trooping the Colour will begin at 1pm. 

What are the times for Trooping the Colour?

The event will start at 10 am with the Horse Guard Parade and will last for around two hours until 12.25 pm. 

After that, the Royal Household will move to the balcony at Buckingham Palace, to address the public. 

Then at 1 pm, the RAF flypast above Buckingham Palace will take place. 

What is the route for Trooping the Colour?

The route for Trooping the Colour will begin at Buckingham Palace and along The Mall towards Horse Guards Parade before going back again. 

If you do not plan to stand by the route, you will still be able to see the parade from St James’s Park. 

How to watch Trooping the Colour

If you aren’t planning on heading to London to watch the parade but still want to see the event, you’re in luck. 

As the BBC will be broadcasting the event in full from 10.30 am until 1.10 pm on Saturday, June 17 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
