Map show locations of all east London road deaths in 2022

In total, 21 people were tragically killed on roads in Redbridge, Newham, Havering, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets, and Barking and Dagenham in 2022.

This number included 21-year-old Grace Payne who died in A13, and a 78-year-old pedestrian who died in Barking Road.

Transport for London (TfL) has now said that more action is needed to prevent all deaths on London roads by the Mayor’s target of 2041.

Data accurate as of the end of April this year shows that there have been eight fatalities on east London roads in 2023.

According to TfL data, Havering was the east London borough with the most fatalities on its roads in 2022, recording six deaths.

In comparison, there was just one death on roads in Waltham Forest last year.

TfL’s walking and cycling commissioner, Will Norman, said: “This data shows that while significant progress is being made, further action is needed to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from London’s streets.

“That’s why we have accelerated our 20mph speed limit programme, are tightening the Direct Vision Safety standard for HGVs and working with the boroughs to deliver high-quality cycle routes.”

Despite the fatalities last year, across the capital, the number of people killed and seriously injured on London’s roads has reduced overall by 38% since 2005-2009.
