An investigation has been launched to find the owner of a dog that brutally killed a cat in east London.

Metropolitan Police were called to Belgrave Road in Ilford at 3.37pm on Monday (October 2) to reports of the attack.

In a video shared on social media, the dog – which MyLondon has reported is a suspected XL Bully – can be seen mauling a cat.

A spokesperson for Met Police has said that the cat was taken to a veterinary surgeon but did not survive.

Enquiries are now being conducted to identify the dog owner, they added. No arrests have been made so far.

Prime minister Rishi Sunak recently announced that XL Bully dogs will be banned in the UK following a number of attacks, triggering debates on the safety of the breed.

A man in Staffordshire, Ian Price, died in a fatal attack by two suspected XL Bully dogs in September.
